Yes the women sing in a high pitched style, but no, their singing did not shatter our glassware and no, we did not need earplugs! The fact that it is very different from European opera does not make it bad or unenjoyable. The costumes are gorgeous, the music and singing are distinctive and entertaining and the acrobatics are remarkable. Yes the translations sometime flash too quickly and like most translations in China, it is not perfect English. When the show started, we found the English translations, which are transmitted on screens to the left and right of the stage, to be quite helpful. We arrived early and as advertised, we watched an actor on the stage apply his striking makeup, enormous beard and colorful costume. However, if you are tourists in Beijing like us and would like to hear and see samples of what Beijing Opera is, then I suggest you ignore the Negative Nellies who sometimes post reviews on Trip Advisor and go to this show. Luckily my wife and I did go to the Beijing Opera performance at the Liyuan Theater at the Qianmen Hotel and we were glad that we did! Yes this is a show designed for tourists, so if you are an experienced patron of Chinese Opera, this may not be the show for you. The show is for a tourist, so if you are, It surely is an enjoyable evening out and worth a visit!Īfter reading some of the negative reviews on Trip Advisor, I was hesitant to attend any of the Beijing Operas. The performace starts at 7:30 PM, but if you go earlier, you may see the performacer's makeup and dressing process which was quite interesting. Sometimes it scrolls too fast or turned off, but it's okay, just relax and enjoy the singing and dancing. The opera performs with old traditional chinese, but there are english subtitles on the screens, so no need to worry about it. I saw "Autumn River", "Goddess of Heaven Scattering Flowers" and "The crossroads". ![]() The repertoire for performance consists of 3 seperate stories and each story performs like about 15-25 mins. ![]() In the VIP secion, some of snacks and drinks, jasmin tea, were provided. The theatre isn't that big, so pick any seats among setion 1 to 3 or even back zone looks fine to me! in the. You can buy a ticket at ticket booth or through internet in advance. But I'm quite glad I went to the theatre and saw the opera, it was worth to see! The liyuan theatre is located at Qianmen hotel which takes 5 mins from Caishikou station, subway line # 4, by a taxi or rickshaw. To be frankly, I also hesitated to buy tickets after checking some of negative comments in tripadvisor. ![]() After watching the china movie "Farewell My Cocubine(1993)" when I was a kid, it was one of my wish(?) list to go to Beijing and see the classic peking opera.
